Be our guest! (Five Minute Friday)

Five Minute Friday!

I love Fridays! Thanks to Lisa Jo at the Gypsy Mama it’s the time when I can just leave my mind to wander and my fingers to roam…trusting the Writer to steer me at will. Journaling whatever flits across my brain for five minutes straight. No backtracking, no spell checking, no stopping until that beepity beep! Want to join in the fun? Click on the button below. Today’s word is WELCOME….

We’re off!

“Be our guest! Be our guest! Put our service to the test!”

I hear the word welcome and for some reason that silly little song by Lumiere starts popping through my brain. Well at least that’s what it did tonight!

But just what does welcome mean? And can you hear “welcome” but not feel it?

You know what I’m talking about…perhaps the first time you visit a new church or you’re the new one in school. It hurts to see the smile on the lips, the voice saying, “we’re glad you’re here” but it doesn’t quite reach the eyes. Puts you on edge and makes you a little leery to stretch out your hand and share anything of yourself.

Welcome is one of the things that I think needs to be done “right”. It needs to be said with a big smile and crinkly eyes and a firm handshake (not crushing or wimpy, but just right). It needs to be said in a way that makes you feel like you’re wrapped in a warm blanket and have a nice cup of hot chocolate in your favorite chair!

And that is what this AWESOME community has been for me. A big smile, crinkly eyes and a perfect handshake!

So to those of you who may be new to this community or to blogging or to Five Minute Friday or the #fmfparty…WELCOME! 😀

And I’m done.

What does welcome mean to you? Is there anything else on your heart? Join in the conversation below so we can all share in the blessings!

  1. OK so I’m opting out of writing 5MF this week. But dang your words are SO right on. I am the Director of Volunteers at my church and I help an volunteer orientation tonight for our greeters and hospitality peeps. I stressed the fact that they had one of the most important jobs as they are the welcoming committee that will be the 1st impression at our church. Oh how a sincere welcome means SO much. Blessings — enjoyed the par.tay tonight!

    • Mindy Bowman says:

Oh man! I was so looking forward to see you pull it off! But, there’s always next week! Ha!

OH YES! First impressions are always the MOST important. If they aren’t good, people won’t stay to get second and third ones! But being from Texas I can’t imagine that your welcome would be anything less than great!

So enjoyed being at the par tay with you tonight, too! 🙂 Blessings to you my friend!

This is my first time participating in five minute friday and you all have been so welcoming. Thank you for making us newbies feel so welcomed!

    • Mindy Bowman says:

Jessica that is the great thing about this group…they are the BEST! The best at making you feel welcome and the best at keeping you lifted up! So glad that you felt that! It makes me and the other ladies glad to know we are passing along what others have done for us! Look forward to getting to know you better! 🙂

Hello, I’m dropping in from FMF. I agree. I think that when “welcoming” one another becomes more of a “chore” than a “joy”, it can have the opposite effect of what we want it to have. Enjoyed the read!

    • Mindy Bowman says:

RaZella you are so right! Welcoming should never be a chore. If it becomes that for me, that’s when I know I need to step back and take a break/recharge! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  7. dianadenis says:

Great, now I’m going to be singing this song ALL DAY! lol You’re right about making sure it’s done right. I hope my smile and my handshake were spot. Thanks for taking the time to make me feel welcome. 🙂

  8. Jamie says:

Yup, I’ll be singing that song today, too… during math and history and science, but hopefully not Bible. No, definitely not Bible.

I totally agree with your take on “welcome”. Crinkly eyes and handshake (not too hard of course) are an absolute must!

    Blessings!

  9. Amy Tilson says:

Thank you for putting that song in my head and sending me on a You Tube quest. Max was sitting beside me as I read and now he wants to watch. You are always so super welcoming. I’m just going to say that all the little, um, lines I have are from smiling and being so welcoming, too. 🙂

    • Mindy Bowman says:

Ha! Ha! Amy I hope Max enjoys his little foray this morning!

I have to say that you are just as super welcoming, my friend. And I have TONS of crinkly “welcome” lines! 😉

  10. I know you do it well with your loving arms and hands, because you do it so very well with your words. You embrace us with your writing, always warm, always wonderful, always welcoming.

  11. I’m with Diana….I’ll be singing in my lumiere accent all day! 😉
again, you always make me smile.
because I feel so welcome. 😉

    wonderful write, friend!

    • Mindy Bowman says:

Thanks Nikki! You know if it wasn’t for you and the rest of the core #FMFParty girls there would be a lot of women who would not feel welcome now! 😉 Blessings to you dear friend!

  12. Joy says:

Oh yeah, I can so relate to this. It’s so hard when you go somewhere and don’t feel welcomed- you feel like you can’t quite open the door to your own soul and let them in either. (And yeah, thanks to you, I’m going to be singing Lumiere’s lines all day today. HEEEE!) Came over here from Lisa’s.

    • Mindy Bowman says:

Hi Joy! Well Hopefully singing Lumiere’s song is a good thing…if not, I’m sorry! Praying that you are always met with a warm welcome because no one likes to feel unwelcome! 😉

  13. Alia Joy says:

It’s a gift to immediately put people at ease in their skin and let them know they are loved even at first introduction but it’s something we should all strive towards as we rub up against one another in day to day life. We should practice hearts of hospitality and grace. Lovely thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

    • Mindy Bowman says:

Alia it is definitely a gift! And you can tell those who have it naturally and those who don’t. But you are right. Whether you have that gift or not, it doesn’t take a lot to smile and be gracefully polite. 🙂

  14. shortybear says:

    Nice welcoming post.

  15. Pamela says:

I couldn’t wait to see what you wrote about about “welcome.” I’m going to remember this tomorrow when I’m welcoming at church. One thing that says welcome to me is a burning candle. I love them burning in the dark when I walk through a room. My husband likes to see them through the window before he walks in the door.

    • Mindy Bowman says:

Thanks Pamela! You’ll have to let me know how your greeting went!

I love burning candles…there is something about the smell of them that adds such a homey feel to the room! 🙂

  16. I totally pictured the entire scene with that song! LOL! Thanks for the visual of how our guests should feel when we “welcome” them! 🙂 Blessings sis!
